Special Movie Projects 1991-2007:
Murray Weissman has been a major participant in the Academy Awards® publicity campaigns for 27 films that have been nominated for Best Picture Oscars®. Seven of these films have gone on to win, including the 2005 winner CRASH, from Lionsgate, which also won Oscars® for Original Screenplay and for Editing. This same year Murray Weissman & Associates were Academy Award® consultants on Sony Pictures’ MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, which garnered three Oscars®.
Weissman and his associates will be working for Sony Pictures again during the 2006-07 awards campaign year on THE DA VINCI CODE, ALL THE KINGS MEN and other Sony theatrical features.
Weissman was a major part of the Academy Award® campaign publicity team for Miramax Films from 1991 through 2004. During that period Miramax represented 11 successive Best Picture Academy Award® nominations, winning three Best Picture Oscars® for “Shakespeare In Love,” “The English Patient” and “Chicago.” Its other Best Picture Academy Award® nominees during that period were “Gangs Of New York,” “In The Bedroom,” “Chocolat,” “The Cider House Rules,” “Good Will Hunting,” “Il Postino,” “Pulp Fiction,” “The Piano” and “The Crying Game.” Also during this period, films represented by Miramax received 13 Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award® nominations, winning three— for “Kolya” ('96), “Farewell My Concubine” ('93) and “Mediterraneo” ('91). Its other Best Foreign Language Film nominees during this period were “Amelie,” “Everybody Famous!”, “Taste Of Others,” “The Grandfather,” Four Days In September,” “Beyond Silence,” “Ridicule,” “The Star Maker,” “Strawberry and Chocolate” and “Close to Eden.” During the years that Weissman participated in the Miramax Academy Award® campaigns, the company garnered a cumulative 94 nominations resulting in a total of 33 wins.
In 2001-02, motion picture clients of Weissman scored a record cumulative 31 Academy Award® nominations, winning five Oscars®. The Academy campaigns they worked on for the year 2001 include the films “The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring” and “I Am Sam” for New Line Cinema; “In The Bedroom,” “Amelie,” “Iris” and “Bridget Jones's Diary” for Miramax Films; and “Ali” for Sony Pictures. Other Best Picture winning campaigns that Weissman has been involved with include “The Sting,” “The Deerhunter,” “Kramer vs Kramer” and “Dances with Wolves.”
In addition, in 1998 Weissman successfully campaigned client James Coburn into winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar®.
